LABOURING IN PRAYER

From the Shepherd's Desk by Charles Magaiza

Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. (Colossians 4:12 KJV)

Prayer is one of the key aspects that distinguishes believers from non believers. Apostle Paul in the above scripture sheds light on how any one of us as a servant of Christ can be effective in this prayer.

There are three things that stand out from this scripture. Prayer is labour, prayer must be fervent and it must consistent. Let’s look at labour; the word itself means hard physical work. We have to deploy our bodies like laborers in the work of prayer. Slothfulness will not yield the final result.

The word fervent means passionate, intense or whole hearted. There is no room for vacillation for it to be effective. You can push a mile further with passion than the one who lacks it! Your heart has to be in it, which is why it cannot be just vain repetitions. When the heart is in, the connection to the Holy Spirit is sure and you will pray with precision led by the Spirit, this will ensure the desired result.

The word consistent means done in same way over time. Jesus is the pure example of this. Even after a big event where miracles happened, He didn’t go to celebrate but went up the mountain to pray to the Father. He was consistent and hence results were evident in His ministry. We must pray when things are good, bad, worse, terrible or in any state. Jesus gave us an example of importunity in prayer when He told us about the woman who went to the judge day in a day out, her message was “avenge me of my enemies.” He was known to be careless and selfish but at some point the widow broke him and he said “ though I fear not God or man but this woman because of her persistence will destroy me.”

Your prayers will be effective from today if you deploy these three mysteries: labouring, fervent and consistent.

Declare this,

Lord help me move from slothfulness to labouring in prayer! Cause the fire of the Holy Spirit to ignite my prayer life into fervency and consistency.
