Ebed-melek got three men and went to the palace wardrobe and got some scraps of old clothing, which they tied together and lowered down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. (Jeremiah 38:11 (MSG)
Prophet Jeremiah’s enemies now had him in the place where they wanted him to be. He was doomed to die a painful death in a pit hole full of mud with no food and water. It was a pitiful situation that needed a special miracle from God. His crime was speaking the word of God.
Ebed-melek approached the king about this injustice and asked him to save the prophet’s life and the mandate was given. He got a rope but seeing Jeremiah had been down there for long, he was weak and hungry and the rope would do more harm than good, he took scraps of old clothing from the wardrobe. These he threw down to Jeremiah so he could put under his armpits and then put the rope on top of them. The scraps became treasure as they accomplished the mission of taking the prophet from the pit to the court house.
Let me speak to you today. You might be in a state of panic in which you feel there is no help! You might be holed in and all you see is the darkness, all you feel are your cold feet! Every night you are getting nightmares and nothing else. Let me assure you that there is help on the way. What might seem like the end is actually the beginning of a new season. Jeremiah prophesied again after this incident.
Ebed-melek means a servant of the king. In that state of panic, I assure you that the King of kings is dispatching a servant to rescue you. There is nothing that is too difficult for Him, He is a great and a mighty King. He can use anything around you to perform that rescue including scraps of old clothing.
Do not dismiss anything around you, God can turn pruning hooks into swords. He can turn a simple mustard seed into a mighty tree. This is the God on your side and He is ready to perform a mighty rescue using the scraps of old clothing in your wardrobe.
Settle down, relax, your Ebed-melek is jumping over mountains to get to you. I pray for you that your despair turns into hope and your fear into courage.
Declare this,
I am coming out of this pit hole and I am coming out strong. My feet are strengthened and I will run again, I will prophesy again and I will enjoy life again.
